The NBA is urging its players to take additional precautions to secure their homes following reports of recent high-profile burglaries of dwellings owned by Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr. , Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis, and Kansas City Chiefs teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. In a memo the NBA sent to its team officials, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, the league revealed that the FBI has connected some burglaries to "transnational South American Theft Groups" that are "reportedly well-organized, sophisticated rings that incorporate advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices." Conley's home was broken into on Sept. 15 when he was at a Minnesota Vikings game and jewelry was taken, officials told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Portis said his home was broken into on Nov. 2 and has offered a $40,000 reward for information related to the incident. The homes of Mahomes and Kelce were broken into within days of each other last month, according to law enforcement reports, and the NFL issued a similar warning memo to its teams this week. The NBA memo, relaying information from the FBI, said the theft rings "are primarily focused on cash and items that can be resold on the black market, such as jewelry, watches, and luxury bags." The NBA, which has also been giving guidance to team security personnel, recommended that players install updated alarm systems with cameras and utilize them whenever leaving the home, keeping valuables in locked and secured safes, remove online real estate listings that may show interior photos of a home, "utilize protective guard services" during extended trips from the home and even suggested having dogs assist with home protection. "Obviously, it's frustrating, disappointing, but I can't get into too many of the details because the investigation is still ongoing," Mahomes recently said. "But, obviously, something you don't want to happen to anybody, but obviously yourself." One of the break-ins involving the Chiefs players happened on a game day — Oct. 7 — and Portis was also playing a game when his home was robbed. "They took most of my prized possessions," Portis said.

From left: Oranga Tamariki's chief social worker Nicolette Dickson, chief executive Andrew Bridgeman and deputy chief executive youth justice Tusha Penny at today's select committee meeting. Photo: RNZ Yesterday, it was reported that one of the young men taking part absconded after attending the funeral of another who had died. Oranga Tamariki deputy chief executive of youth justice services and residential care Tusha Penny told the select committee this morning that two participants were actually on the run. One escaped from the tangi and another a day later, she said. Penny acknowledged the death of one of the boot camp's participants and their whānau. Oranga Tamariki and Waikato police both confirmed the 15-year-old, who was granted bail on compassionate grounds to attend the funeral by the Youth Court, had absconded. Police were looking for him. The New Zealand Herald reported it understood the young man who died was the fatality in a crash on State Highway 1 near Tīrau on Wednesday last week between three vehicles, including a tourist bus, which injured 14 others. Those taking part in the pilot were released from the youth justice facility in Palmerston North in October, and have been in the community phase of the boot camp programme.Chevron Announces 2025 Capex Budget & 4Q24 Interim UpdatesQuinn Hughes is on pace to go where only Paul Reinhart has gone before with the Vancouver Canucks . Reinhart is the lone defenceman to lead the Canucks in scoring in a season, thanks to his 57 points, including 17 goals, in 1989-90. This current version of the Canucks plays their 35th game of the campaign Saturday afternoon against the Seattle Kraken, and Hughes leads the team in points with 42, including eight goals. Centre Elias Pettersson (10-18-28) and wingers Conor Garland (8-19-27) and Jake DeBrusk (15-10-25) are next in line in the points column for the Rogers Arena crew. Hughes didn’t practice with the club on Friday due to an undisclosed injury. Pettersson was also missing. Coach Rick Tocchet is listing both as doubtful to face Seattle , although they are slated to be re-evaluated by team medical personnel. A defenceman topping an NHL team in scoring in a season is rare, but not unheard of. Roman Josi had led the Nashville Predators in points for four straight years before finishing second to winger Filip Forsberg last season. Keith Yandle and then Oliver Ekman-Larsson went back-to-back consecutively atop the Arizona Coyotes’ scoring chart from 2012-16. Ray Bourque, who is the all-time leader in scoring amongst defencemen in NHL history and sat No. 12 overall heading into the action around the circuit on Friday, led the Boston Bruins in scoring five times during his 21-year run with the club. Fellow Bruins great Bobby Orr led the entire league in scoring twice during his career, marking the only time a blueliner won the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top scorer. Hughes, 25, is on pace currently for 19 goals and 101 points this season. A defenceman has tallied 100 points or more in a season just 15 times in NHL history . Orr did it six times, and Paul Coffey accomplished it five. The last rearguard to get to the 100-point mark was Erik Karlsson (25-76-101) in 2022-23 with San Jose Sharks. Hughes played the full 82-game schedule last season for Vancouver and put up 17 goals and 92 points, which left him second in team scoring behind centre J.T. Miller (37-66-103). It was the third-straight season that Hughes had established a Canuck record for points in a season by a defenceman , following up his efforts in 2021-22 (8-60-68) and in 2022-23 (7-69-76). Prior to Hughes’ arrival, the Canucks’ record for points in a season by a defenceman belonged to Doug Lidster’s 1986-87 campaign (12-51-63). Reinhart’s 1989-90 is seventh best on that Vancouver list. Adrian Aucoin set the Vancouver single-season goals standard for defenceman (23) in 1998-99 . Hughes’ career-best output last season slid him into a five-way tie for fourth spot overall in the team record book, including Reinhart’s aforementioned season. Vancouver finished last in the Smythe Division that campaign, at 25-41-14. Centre Trevor Linden, who was 19 and in his second year with the team, was second in Canucks scoring (21-30-51). That wound up being Reinhart’s final campaign in the NHL. He retired the following September at the age of 30, due to back issues. Hughes had been a game-time decision for Monday’s win over the San Jose Sharks. He did wind up playing. Saturday is slated to be the 400th game of Hughes’ career. He is second in all-time scoring (51-324-375) amongst Vancouver’s rearguards, trailing only Alexander Edler (99-310-409). Edler played 925 games in Vancouver colours. Hughes was Vancouver’s first pick, No. 7 overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft . He was second in scoring amongst that draft class as of Friday morning, trailing only Ottawa Senators winger Brady Tkachuk (174-204-382), who went No. 4 overall. Hughes was second in the league in defencemen scoring to start Friday, trailing Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar (11-34-45). Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Zach Werenski (11-24-35) was third. Werenski was leading the NHL in ice time (26:30 minutes per game) for defencemen. Hughes (25:08) was sixth. He finished 11th last season (24:41). Vancouver did announce on Dec. 3 that Filip Hronek , who is Vancouver’s No. 2 defenceman, would be out eight weeks “after having a lower-body procedure.” Hughes has played 26 minutes or more in five of Vancouver’s last eight games, including 29:50 in the 4-3 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues on Dec. 10. sewen@postmedia.com

Understand why they are barking Burch said the prevention trick you use depends on what type of barking they’re doing. The four most common reasons a dog barks: To alert: Like if a stranger is at the front door. To communicate: Either to you (such as wanting to go outside) or to another dog. Excitement: Like you would see when playing a game with them or if they are reacting to a moving object. Separation: When they are left alone. What to try when you are at home Burch said some dogs use barking as a way to react to moving objects such as cars, vacuum cleaners or even other dogs. She said this barking can be controlled by using treats to teach your dog how to do the following. Bark on cue: When you notice your dog barking at an object, wait for them to stop. After they are quiet, say the command “quiet” out loud and reward them a treat. But “whatever you do, don’t give the dog the food reward when it is barking,” Burch said. It’s important not to do this, because you are trying to associate an activity that is incompatible with barking (like sitting quietly) with the reward. Sit and watch: This tip is particularly useful if your dog is barking at a household object like a vacuum cleaner. When you start vacuuming, sit your dog on the other side of the room. After your dog stops barking, go over to them and say a command like “good boy, quiet” and give them a treat. Over time, Burch said your dog should be able to get closer to the vacuum cleaner or other items without constantly barking. What to do when your dog is alone It’s unavoidable. You have to go to work, buy groceries or a number of other situations where you have to leave your dog home by themselves. In response, your dog barks awaiting your return, possibly disturbing your neighbors. Dr. Burch said a common suggestion for separation barking is to turn on the television or radio to help them calm down. “If you try this and it works, you are lucky,” she said. “It is an easy solution (but), unfortunately the television and radio solutions don’t often work.” What does work is finding out why your dog is barking, and shaping your prevention strategies around that. Excitement: If your dog goes to the window to bark at people walking down the street or squirrels digging for acorns in your backyard, try keeping the curtains closed. Boredom: Try an interactive dog toy. Those that make your dog solve puzzles to win a treat are pretty effective. Separation anxiety: Set up training sessions with a certified specialist. And if you don’t know exactly why your dog is barking, Burch said setting up a camera might help you find out. ‘A tired dog is a happy dog’ Overall, Burch said the best solution to help prevent your dog from barking excessively is a combination of training and involving them in activities for their mental well-being. This includes regular exercise and enrolling them in programs where they can socialize with other dogs and people. “There is a saying that a tired dog is a happy dog,” she said. “Your dog might be more likely to relax and rest peacefully (minus barking) if it is provided with training that results in mental stimulation and exercise. A skilled trainer or animal behaviorist can help you if you are not having success on your own.”KILLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — American skier Mikaela Shiffrin said she suffered an abrasion on her left hip and that something “stabbed” her when she crashed during her second run of a World Cup giant slalom race Saturday, doing a flip and sliding into the protective fencing. Shiffrin stayed down on the edge of the course for quite some time as the ski patrol attended to her. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd before going to a clinic for evaluation. “Not really too much cause for concern at this point, I just can’t move,” she said later in a video posted on social media . “I have a pretty good abrasion and something stabbed me. ... I’m so sorry to scare everybody. It looks like all scans so far are clear.” She plans to skip the slalom race Sunday, writing on Instagram she will be “cheering from the sideline.” The 29-year-old was leading after the first run of the GS and charging for her 100th World Cup win. She was within sight of the finish line, five gates onto Killington’s steep finish pitch, when she an outside edge. She hit a gate and did a somersault before sliding into another gate. The fencing slowed her momentum as she came to an abrupt stop. Reigning Olympic GS champion Sara Hector of Sweden won in a combined time of 1 minute, 53.08 seconds. Zrinka Ljutic of Croatia was second and Swiss racer Camille Rast took third. The Americans saw Paula Moltzan and Nina O’Brien finish fifth and sixth. “It’s just so sad, of course, to see Mikaela crash like that and skiing so well,” Hector said on the broadcast after her win. “It breaks my heart and everybody else here.” The crash was a surprise for everyone. Shiffrin rarely DNFs — ski racing parlance for “did not finish.” In 274 World Cup starts, she DNF'd only 18 times. The last time she DNF'd in GS was January 2018. Shiffrin also has not suffered any devastating injuries. In her 14-year career, she has rehabbed only two on-hill injuries: a torn medial collateral ligament and bone bruising in her right knee in December 2015 and a sprained MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her left knee after a downhill crash in January 2024. Neither knee injury required surgery, and both times, Shiffrin was back to racing within two months. Saturday was shaping up to be a banner day for Shiffrin, who skied flawlessly in the first run and held a 0.32-second lead as she chased after her 100th World Cup win. Shiffrin, who grew up in both New Hampshire and Colorado and sharpened her skills at nearby Burke Mountain Academy, has long been a fan favorite. Shiffrin is driven not so much by wins but by arcing the perfect run. She has shattered so many records along the way. She passed Lindsey Vonn’s women’s mark of 82 World Cup victories on Jan. 24, 2023, during a giant slalom in Kronplatz, Italy. That March, Shiffrin broke Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark’s Alpine mark for most World Cup wins when she captured her 87th career race. To date, she has earned five overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals — along with a silver — and seven world championships. In other FIS Alpine World Cup news, the Tremblant World Cup — two women’s giant slaloms at Quebec’s Mont-Tremblant scheduled for next weekend — were canceled. Killington got 21 inches of snow on Thanksgiving Day, but Tremblant — five hours north of Killington — had to cancel its races because of a lack of snow. US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher is retiring from international soccerWalgreens Boots Alliance is considering selling the company to a private equity firm – a move that would take the publicly traded company private, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Deerfield-based Walgreens has been in discussions with Sycamore Partners over a deal that could be completed early next year, the Journal wrote, citing unnamed “people familiar with the matter.” A Walgreens spokesperson declined to comment on the report Tuesday, telling the Tribune, “we don’t comment on rumors or speculation about our business.” A spokesperson for Sycamore also declined to comment. Walgreens’ stock shot up 21% on the news early Tuesday afternoon. New York-based Sycamore specializes in retail and consumer investment, and would likely sell off pieces of the business or work with partners, the Journal reported. The report follows years of struggles for the massive retail pharmacy chain, some of which are related to industrywide challenges over reimbursements for medications, while others stem from past moves made by Walgreens. The company announced plans in October to close 1,200 stores — about 14% of its U.S. locations — over the next three years, saying that only about three-quarters of its U.S. stores are profitable. Walgreens has also conducted several rounds of layoffs, eliminating more than 1,000 jobs over the last few years, including many in Illinois. The company has had a cost-cutting program in place for years, and exceeded its goal of cutting $1 billion in costs last fiscal year, following years of similar measures. Many of the cuts came as Walgreens worked in recent years to become more of a health care destination, partnering with various health care providers. Walgreens invested billions in primary care provider VillageMD and had planned to put Village Medical clinics in 1,000 of its stores by 2027. But Walgreens has since backtracked on that plan. In March, CEO Tim Wentworth said Walgreens had recorded a $5.8 billion impairment charge related to VillageMD, and that VillageMD would close 160 clinics. In August, Walgreens said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it was considering selling all or part of its VillageMD business. In recent months, Wentworth has indicated that Walgreens is now working on a different strategy of focusing more on its historic work as a retail pharmacy-led organization.

NEW YORK (AP) — Greg Gumbel, a longtime CBS sportscaster, has died from cancer, according to a statement from family released by CBS on Friday. He was 78. “He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten,” his wife Marcy Gumbel and daughter Michelle Gumbel said in a statement. In March, Gumbel missed his first NCAA Tournament since 1997 due to what he said at the time were family health issues. Gumbel was the studio host for CBS since returning to the network from NBC in 1998. Gumbel signed an extension with CBS last year that allowed him to continue hosting college basketball while stepping back from NFL announcing duties. In 2001, he announced Super Bowl XXXV for CBS, becoming the first Black announcer in the U.S. to call play-by-play of a major sports championship. David Berson, president and CEO of CBS Sports, described Greg Gumbel as breaking barriers and setting standards for others during his years as a voice for fans in sports, including in the NFL and March Madness. “A tremendous broadcaster and gifted storyteller, Greg led one of the most remarkable and groundbreaking sports broadcasting careers of all time,” said Berson. Gumbel had two stints at CBS, leaving the network for NBC when it lost football in 1994 and returning when it regained the contract in 1998. He hosted CBS’ coverage of the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics and called Major League Baseball games during its four-year run broadcasting the national pastime. But it was football and basketball where he was best known and made his biggest impact. Gumbel hosted CBS’ NFL studio show, “The NFL Today” from 1990 to 1993 and again in 2004. He also called NFL games as the network’s lead play-by-play announcer from 1998 to 2003, including Super Bowl XXXV and XXXVIII. He returned to the NFL booth in 2005, leaving that role after the 2022 season.
