In the end, the downfall of the Assad family in Syria serves as a powerful reminder that true power ultimately lies in the hands of the people. As long as rulers fail to govern with the consent and support of their citizens, their days in power are inevitably numbered. The legacy of the Assad regime's collapse will forever stand as a testament to the enduring power of the people and the fragility of even the most entrenched authoritarian regimes.
(The Center Square) – The Biden administration on Monday instituted a new round of restrictions targeting the export of advanced semiconductor chips and manufacturing equipment to China. This move by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security builds on previous measures aimed at curbing China's ability to develop cutting-edge technologies, particularly artificial intelligence and military applications. The new export controls place 140 manufacturers and investment companies on the Entity List, a U.S. compilation of "foreign individuals, companies, and organizations deemed a national security concern." "The United States has taken significant steps to protect our technology from being used by our adversaries in ways that threaten our national security," National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in a statement . The new controls will also block the sale of high-bandwidth memory, which is necessary for artificial intelligence. Semiconductors can be a strategic asset for AI systems, supercomputing, and other technologies for both civilian and military use. Sullivan continued, "As technology evolves, and our adversaries seek new ways to evade restrictions, we will continue to work with our allies and partners to proactively and aggressively safeguard our world-leading technologies and know-how so they aren't used to undermine our national security." According to a U.S. Government Accountability Office report, semiconductors, also known as computer chips, are typically smaller than a postage stamp and are composed of billions of components that can store, move and process data. Advanced semiconductors can be used for artificial intelligence, including in medical diagnosis and for military purposes, such as modeling nuclear explosions. The U.S. has been tightening down on the export controls on semiconductors to China since concerns over U.S. capacity to produce advanced semiconductors domestically when shortages began during the pandemic. This concern resulted in Congress enacting the CHIPS Act of 2022. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded. "This type of behavior seriously violates the laws of market economy and the principle of fair competition, disrupts international economic and trade order, destabilizes global industrial and supply chains, and will eventually harm the interests of all countries," Jian said. Beijing intends to take firm, resolute measures to defend the interests of Chinese companies, he added. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration Thea D. Rozman Kendler said, "The PRC's Military-Civil Fusion strategy presents a significant risk that advanced node semiconductors will be used in military applications that threaten the security of the United States, as well as the security of our allies and partners."
A Texas congresswoman defended President Joe Biden 's decision to pardon his son, deeming the move as justifiable amid accusations of hypocrisy from Republicans and comparisons to President-elect Donald Trump 's criminal controversies. Hunter Biden faced federal charges, including three felony counts tied to lying on a gun purchase application in 2018 and nine counts of tax evasion, for which he pleaded guilty earlier this year. The charges carried a maximum penalty of over 40 years in prison combined, but federal guidelines suggested a much lighter sentence. On Sunday night, President Biden issued an unconditional pardon for Hunter, citing Republican political pressure infecting the legal proceedings. This pardon comes after years of GOP scrutiny aimed at the Biden family involving accusations about Hunter's drug abuse, personal struggles and international business dealings. Republicans have condemned Biden's pardon as an abuse of presidential power, arguing it undermines prior commitments to impartial justice. In response, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) has publicly called out GOP "pearl-clutching," highlighting Trump's legal troubles and history of controversial pardons, the Daily Beast reported. "At the end of the day, we know that we have a 34-count convicted felon that is about to walk into the White House," Crockett said of Trump, who was found guilty in the Stormy Daniels hush-money trial earlier this year. "So for anyone that wants to clutch their pearls now because he decided that he was going to pardon his son, I would say take a look in the mirror. Because we also know that when it comes to this cabinet, this cabinet has more people accused of sexual assault than any incoming cabinet probably ever in the history of America." Crockett pointed out that Hunter's pardon is minor in comparison to Trump's history of pardoning allies like Roger Stone and Paul Manafort in his first term. The president-elect also has suggested pardoning his allies involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack. GOP-led investigations into Hunter have yet to yield criminal evidence against President Biden. Originally published by Latin Times
